Petrochemical storage facility blaze injures 2
10:40 AM CDT on Wednesday, September 24, 2008
PASADENA, Texas – At least one person was seriously injured when a petrochemical storage facility caught fire Tuesday night.
Investigators say the blaze started inside the Kinder Morgan terminal, located at N. Witter and Red Bluff.
The fire burned for seven and a half hours, but seemed to be out by early Wednesday morning. At its peak, the blaze could be seen for miles.
Police say a manifold was burning, which is like a small engine that directs petroleum traffic.
The pipelines are thousands of miles long, so Kinder Morgan shut the valves to stop the flames from traveling through the pipelines.
There were 23 employees working at the time. Two of them were injured, one from heat exhaustion and the other from severe burns. Both victims remain in the hospital.
There is no word on the cause of the fire, but multiple agencies, including the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and OSHA, are investigating.
One of the possible causes they are looking into is Hurricane Ike.
