Hurricane Ike debris could fill Daisetta Sinkhole to the brim
08:25 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 24, 2008
HOUSTON - Bit by bit, the trees that ended up on front lawns, garages and homes after Hurricane Ike are being hauled away.
Mayor Bill White says the debris is being hauled to land the city just bought off 288 near Almeda Genoa.
The property will eventually become an amateur soccer complex. For now, it's a dumping site.
There are seven centers just like it across the city of Houston. And by the end of the day Wednesday, crews will have collected and dumped more than 13,000 truckloads of debris. That's enough yard waste to fill half the Houston Astrodome.
By the time the clean-up is over there will be enough Ike-related yard waste to fill the Daisetta Sinkhole to the brim. The mayor says the debris won’t be taken to a landfill.
“One of the sort of interesting things we are thinking about is what creative stuff can be done with wood chips,” White said.
