Returning Galveston residents told to bring cleaning supplies

GALVESTON -- On the corner of Stewart and Dominique on Galveston's west end, Jimmy and Barbara Jones crowd around a little lantern, which is the only light they have. They've been living without power and, for a time, without water for the last 10 days.

Galveston returnees: Bring lots of cleaning supplies

“The devastation isn't like it was for Carla or Alicia.  I've never had water on the street, and to have water in the house this time is unbelievable," said Jimmy Jones.

After Hurricane Ike, the Jones' had several inches of water in their home.  They were forced to rip out their carpet, and now they are trying to keep the mildew at bay.

Life on the island is not what it was a little over a week ago.

“People who come back have to be prepared for fences down, roofs off, windows broken and water off. There are no utilities right now," said Barbara Jones.

Jimmy and Barbara also urge people to bring their own supplies like masks and bug spray.

“There is not a lot of air conditioning and food services are limited. It's not like you can go to Wal Mart and get what you need," said Barbara Jones.

The streets of Galveston may not be the place for children or the elderly, but life is getting better for the Jones'. Each day they see more progress. They know in the days to come Galveston will return to what it used to be.

“It'll survive. We'll do it," said Jimmy Jones.

The Jones' also suggest bringing a lot of cleaning supplies such as bleach.
