Dozens of RVs go up in flames
07:50 PM CDT on Monday, September 1, 2008
GALVESTON – On Sunday morning, huge plumes of smoke could be seen off of Highway 3 in southeast Houston, as dozens of campers and RVs burned in a fire.
Residents in the area said they could hear the propane tanks from the campers exploding one after another.
“I heard it. They shook the house. The propane bottles went off like bombs over there,” said Bob Mullen, who lives in the area.
Bob Mullen lost two campers in the fire, and watching the flames, was like watching his retirement go up in smoke. He had planned to retire soon, to live life on the road.
“It makes me sick to my stomach. I was just fixing to go over there and load some stuff in it,” said Mullen.
Some RV owners were lucky. Sue Haase had made a decision not to park her camper under the cover roof.
“They had a spot come available and asked if we wanted it. We decided to keep the camper where it was because it was easier for me to back it up,” said Hasse.
In total, 48 RVs and campers were caught in the blaze at A&B Dry Storage. The damage is estimated at $6 million.
Investigators believe the fire may have started after one owner tried to repair his camper.
