Sam Houston High launching college prep academy

HOUSTON --Two months ago, the superintendent announced the plan to repurpose Sam Houston High School after it was considered academically unacceptable for six years.
To solve the problem, they now have two schools: A 10th to 12th grade school that focuses on math and science, and a 9th grade academy where they prepare students for college.
This is a new approach for the 92 percent Hispanic student body. Many had given up on the possibility of going to college.
In the last two months, the school created 46 new classrooms out of new portable buildings. They also have a new principal.
“Our school will be a fairly innovative approach to teaching," said Principal Rudy Trevino.
Rudy Trevino is also the Chancellor of the 9th grade academy. He said because the academy will focus on college preparation. The uniform for both the teachers and the students will be the college shirt of their choice.
They will also introduce a college prep curriculum that will include classes like Student Leadership, taught by a motivated first year professor.
"If this works, I was a part of something special. And I know it's going to work. I'm not going to say 'if it works.' It will work," said Timothy Eldridge, the school’s Team Leadership Teacher.
But before the program can work, they will need to change the mindset and part of that has to do with the students and parents. Trevino said he asked at orientation how many of the 300 parents had graduated from college. Out of the 300, only four of them stood up.
