Harry Williams, a wide receiver for the Texans, is undergoing surgery.

Williams, who is a wide receiver for the Texans, was injured during a kickoff in the first quarter of Friday night’s game against Dallas.

The injury happened when Williams attempted to make a tackle on the Dallas return man. At the same time, he was accidentally hit by his own teammate, Nick Ferguson.

“He [Williams] was alert on the field, but paralyzed from the neck down,” said Dr. Walt Lowe, the Houston Texans team doctor.

Dr. Lowe said they immobilized his spine and he took him Presbyterian Hospital-Dallas for evaluation. While on the way to the hospital, Williams began to regain feeling in his arms and legs.

The evaluation at the hospital revealed a fracture of the C-3 vertebra and a significant ligament injury to the neck. This type of injury will require Williams to undergo surgical stabilization.

This injury comes at a monumental time in William’s football career.  Signed by the Texans in February 2008, he was on the verge of the making the Houston Texans team.  During training camp, his receiving abilities were starting to show through, and his special team skills impressed the coaches.

Coach Kubiak said Williams' family is with him in a Dallas area hospital.
