Deputies investigating man's unusual death

08:30 AM CDT on Thursday, August 7, 2008

By Sara Foley / The Daily News

SAN LEON — Investigators don’t know what killed a man found dead inside his trailer Wednesday afternoon but are calling his death “suspicious” after questioning the man’s girlfriend for several hours.

An autopsy will be conducted today to find out what killed Mauricio Ramirez, 42, whose body didn’t have any obvious signs of trauma, said John Florence, a spokesman with the medical examiner’s office.

Galveston County Sheriff’s Deputies were called out to the trailer Ramirez shared with his girlfriend just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The girlfriend told deputies Ramirez came home sweating profusely, so she “put him in the shower,” sheriff’s office spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said.

He died while in the shower, she reportedly told investigators.

Tuttoilmondo said the death was unusual, but officers don’t know whether foul play was involved.

“It has our interest,” he said. “It’s in the hands of the medical examiner now.”

Ramirez was supposed to drive Wednesday to South Padre Island and start a new job, his older brother, Arthur Ramirez, said.

“He came by Monday, asking me to go with him,” Ramirez said. “I don’t know why he didn’t leave.”

He said his brother didn’t have any known health problems and didn’t use drugs. Mauricio Ramirez’s girlfriend called his family members, telling them he died because he had “an attack of some kind,” Ramirez said.

The couple lived in the San Leon trailer home for about a year, the brother said.
