HOUSTON -- An overnight crime spree ended with two people dead Tuesday.

Investigators say it all started with an argument inside a convenience store.

They said two men were arguing over money in the store when one of them pulled out a gun and shot the other, killing him.

The shooter also fired at the clerk, but he was behind bulletproof glass.

The shooter then fled the store, stole a Lexus and took off.

Police said he sped down a one-way street in the wrong direction and crashed right in front of a Precinct One deputy constable, who had stopped to help a woman who ran out of gas.

The suspect then pointed his gun at the deputy and attempted to steal his patrol car, but it wouldn’t start.

The deputy managed to talk the suspect out of the car and struggled to get him to the ground.

Investigators think the suspect had a heart attack during that struggle, and he died at the hospital.

They believe the man was on some kind of substance, but they were waiting on verification from the Medical Examiner’s report.

The deputy constable was not injured.
