Dolly prompts Galveston flood warning
01:50 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 23, 2008
GALVESTON -- The city of Galveston is taking precautions as Hurricane Dolly continues on her path. As of this afternoon, the surf was beginning to increase in size and the area was experiencing spurts of rain from the extreme outer edges of the storm.
One of the precautions the city has taken has been to move the lifeguard stations from the beach up onto the seawall to prevent them from being damaged. They are expecting high tides as early as Wednesday morning.
Already, the beach has issued a red flag warning telling people not to go out more than waste deep. Rip currents in the heavy surf are a real danger and one lifeguard found himself in trouble earlier today because of this. Rescuers were called, but he was able to struggle ashore on his own.
While the current is the only real concern at the moment, tides a few feet higher than normal are expected early tomorrow morning, and bring with them the potential of flooding at the west end of the seawall.
But tourists and local surfers don't seem to be concerned. Instead, they are thankful they are on the outer fringes of the storm and say there is nothing to worry about. In fact, one surfer is still looking to catch some waves before the storm is over.
"The wind's out of the wrong direction. Maybe if the wind turns around tomorrow, it might be better tomorrow," said Dennis Genarie, who is looking to surf.
The Emergency Operations Center of Galveston has also shut down for the day, which is another indication that while the danger hasn’t passed, they aren’t as worried as they were a few hours ago.
