HOUSTON -- Investigators spent the day at the Lyondell Basell plant trying to figure out what caused the crane to collapse on Friday. While one of the seven men injured is still in the hospital, another who escaped injury says he was lucky.

Michael Gabriel was in the deadly path of the crane that collapsed at the Lyondell Basell refinery.

“The crane landed exactly where I was standing. If I wouldn't have moved, it would have smashed me,” said Gabriel.

He escaped with minor injuries, but like dozens of other workers, he says he had to run for his life.

“The crane fell. It hit the ground and it made me fall onto the pipes. And once it hit the pipes, the pipes went up and hit me,” said Gabriel.

“I didn't know what to do. You know if he was gone... what am I going to do with my daughter? She's about to be one and I just didn't know what to think,” said Kayla Gabriel, Michael’s wife.

The flags outside the refinery are at half staff to pay respect to Marion "Scooter" Hubert Odom III, John D. Henry, Daniel "DJ" Lee Johnson and Rocky Dale Strength who died, and the seven workers injured in the crash. To make sure that this type of tragedy doesn't happen again, Osha and Lyondell are investigating the collapse of the crane.

“We will leave no stone unturned until we find out what exactly happened,” said David Roznowski of Lyondell Basell.

For the Gabriels, the crash was a frightening reality check and one that changed their lives. In fact, they’ve changed their family motto to: Live, laugh and love TODAY... because tomorrow may never come.

“You look at my daughter. I can't have her be raised without a dad. I have to be there for her,” said Gabriel.

After nearly losing his life, Michael Gabriel says he's ready for a career change and doesn’t plan on returning to the refinery. But for the employees who will be coming back to work, grief counselors will be on-site for the next three days.
