Arrest made in North Fwy. fatal shooting
10:52 AM CDT on Thursday, July 17, 2008
HOUSTON -- Homicide detectives were investigating a rush-hour shooting on the feeder road of the North Freeway near Rankin Road on Wednesday. A passenger in an SUV was shot to death in an apparent case of road rage.
The victim was in the vehicle with his wife and daughter when another SUV began following them closely, said Houston police. An argument that started a few blocks away from I-45 ended in gunfire.
The wife told investigators they were trying to get to an HPD substation to report the other vehicle. That's when the driver of an Isuzu Rodeo apparently fired at least one shot into their vehicle, hitting her husband in the chest.
“I was behind the car when he shot into the car,” said eyewitness Glen Jackson. “They were shaken up. One girl had glass all over her and the other was in the back seat.”
Emergency crews worked on the victim for several minutes before rushing him to the hospital. Doctors weren't able to save the unidentified man.
Late Wednesday night, police arrested a man they believe to have been the triggerman in the shooting. He was behind the wheel of an Isuzu Rodeo that eyewitnesses described as the vehicle where the shots came from.
Police were attempting to interview the suspect, and said he is facing murder charges.
The victim's family members told 11 News that there had been a history of tension between the victim and the shooting suspect. They did not understand how – or why – the anger was taken to a new level on the freeways of Houston.
