Sweeny residents may vote to booze it up

SWEENY, Texas -- For 50 years, the Brazoria County town of Sweeny has been dry. Not one drop of alcohol can legally be sold in the community.
In November, voters will get the chance to finally turn on the taps. County Commissioners on Tuesday voted to put on the ballot a measure to allow the sale of libations in the city.
It will be the second vote to lift an alcohol prohibition in as many years for the community.
Last fall, voters in one section of Sweeny overwhelming approved a proposition to allow the sale of beer and wine for off-premise use and mixed beverages in restaurants. However, the Texas Attorney General's office recently ruled that the city's ban, which was passed in 1958, trumped that vote.
That means the entire city has to go to the polls to decide if liquor can be sold in Sweeny.
Right now, a beer-only proposition is on the ballot, but it is expected that petitions will arrive at the county clerk's office to add wine and mixed drinks to the vote.
