Joe Horn's police videos released

05:51 PM CDT on Thursday, July 3, 2008

PASADENA, Texas -- Police on Wednesday released video of interviews with Pasadena homeowner Joe Horn on the day he gunned down two suspected burglars in his front yard. The videos, obtained and first published by the Houston Chronicle on its Web site, show Horn as he walks investigators through the steps he took before and up until the time he confronted the two men last November.

In the video, Horn says he was upstairs in his home checking e-mails on his computer when he heard noise outside his window. Horn then told police he saw to men climbing out the window of his neighbor’s home.

He continued to walk through his actions of that day and eventually led police to his front yard, where he dramatically reenacted the shooting.

An emotional Horn, who paused several times to gather himself, said he wasn’t expecting to find the men in his yard when he came out the door with his shotgun.

“I thought I'd been scared in my life. But I have never been scared like that, Horn said. “I ain't never been scared like that. I came out here and I expected to get a license (plate) from them or something. I had 911, they hung up and I called back.”

“I tried to do everything to avoid a situation like this," he said.

But when he felt threatened?

“I wheeled around and I shot ‘em. One was going this way and one was going this way,” Horn told investigators. “I wheeled around. and when I saw the first shape. I shot him."

The videos also contain an interview with Horn at the Pasadena police station about a month after the shooting.

A Harris County grand jury on Monday declined to indict Horn on any criminal charges related to the shootings.

The police interviews were released on the same day that Horn -- for the first time -- was publicly defending his actions.

In interviews with the Chronicle and radio talk show host Michael Berry, Horn repeated his assertion that he was defending himself and that he doesn’t consider himself a hero.
