Houston reacts after grand jury clears Horn
04:30 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 1, 2008
PASADENA, Texas – In the wake of Monday’s grand jury decision on Joe Horn, Timberline Drive stood ready.
Police blocked every entrance to the once-quiet Pasadena neighborhood in preparation for protests.
Neighbors posted signs, ready for the media. Even Horn himself was ready, a sign in the window was a clear signal that visitors were not welcome at his home.
“If it goes on for long, we’ll all put up signs,” neighbor Sam Hawkins said.
On Houston’s talk radio Monday, it seemed as if everyone had an opinion about the grand jury’s decision.
“The grand jury made the right decision,” one caller said during Michael Berry’s talk show on AM 740 KTRH. The call lines were flooded as Houstonians reacted to the decision.
“The guy was told not to go outside,” a caller who disagreed with the decision argued.
The opinions weren’t limited to the radio airwaves.
“They’re thieves, they were stealing. (Shoot them) in the back, in the butt. It doesn’t matter,” said Randi Laird, one of Horn’s neighbors. “Kill them. Kill them right there. Drop them dead.”
Hawkins is more moderate in his opinions.
“Everybody I talked to said (Horn) did right,” he said.
But that doesn’t mean he would react the same way.
“I doubt it. After all, I don’t have any guns,” Hawkins said.
While Horn’s attorney said his client is relieved, 11 News legal expert Gerald Treece said the Pasadena man is not off the hook.
“Its not over for a lot of reasons,” said Treece. “Mr. Horn is still going to be looking at civil lawsuits and second, because the grand jury can still look at this.” And Horn could face another round of neighborhood protests. From his front porch, Hawkins had a good view of the cops standing guard, waiting for something like the December protest that pitted Pasadena against itself.
Quanell X was there that day, calling for Horn’s indictment. So was Laird, who called for the activist to leave Pasadena.
“We’re at a point in our country where we have to take control back,” Laird said.
