HOUSTON -- The man accused of running down a Houston police officer was formally charged with manslaughter early Monday morning.

Dressed in hospital scrubs, 24-year-old Hung Troung appeared before a judge, and his bond was set at $50,000.

Police said Troung was behind the wheel of a car that plowed into a construction site setup up at the intersection of the Katy Freeway and Highway 6 on Sunday morning.

The car ended up hitting two police officers.

Officer Joe Pyland was hospitalized with a broken leg and is in fair condition, but Officer Gary Gryder died from his injuries.

Gryder was a 23-year veteran with the Houston Police Department. Those who knew him best said he was a man who loved his family.

Sunday afternoon, Gryder’s son, Austin, honored his father by playing a game they both loved — baseball.

“If Gary loved anything more than being a police officer, it was playing baseball with his son and coming out here with his family on the weekends,” Officer Matt Calley, Gryder’s police partner and longtime friend, said.

To help ease Austin’s pain, officers told him to go out Sunday and play the game he and his father shared such a fondness for. With his mother and several other officers in the stands, Austin played and helped his team win.

Meanwhile, flags are flying at half staff at the HPD substation where Officer Gryder worked.

It’s in the 4500 block of Beechnut in Southwest Houston.
