Associated Press

HOUSTON -- NASA today announced educator-astronaut Barbara Morgan is leaving the space agency.

Morgan has accepted a position at Boise State University in Idaho.

Morgan flew last August on shuttle Endeavour.

She was a backup to payload specialist Christa McAuliffe in the

1980s Teacher in Space Program. McAuliffe and the other six crewmembers died in the 1986 Challenger accident.

Morgan was working as an elementary teacher in McCall, Idaho, before being chosen as McAuliffe’s backup.

Morgan returned to teaching after the Challenger disaster. She was chosen to train as a NASA mission specialist in 1998.
