Web cam catches burglar red-handed
08:32 PM CDT on Thursday, June 26, 2008
AUSTIN, Texas -- The house was empty, it was late at night, but this burglar didn't realize that a camera was rolling. Now the Austin homeowner wants help to identify the man caught on camera.
A burglar breaks out a window. Under the cover of darkness, he climbs inside Chris Mullins' home.
"It was scary just how brazen this person was, breaking a window, turning the lights on and off," said Mullins.
The burglar is seen taking Mullins' bike. Then, he makes a big mistake. He goes right up to the computer screen. The web camera captures a clear picture of his face and even shows the tattoos on his arms. This is something very few burglary victims have and Mullins is making it public.
"The more people who see it, the better chance of someone recognizing this person," he said.
Matt Vickers of Dyezz surveillance says more and more people are investing in cameras.
"As the economy worsens and people have less money they tend to go out and steal things," he said.
Vickers says outdoor cameras are the best sellers, but cameras can be hidden inside too.
"It looks like a motion detector on a security system. People tell us that they catch things all the time," said Vickers.
Cameras won't stop the thefts, but give homeowners like Mullins a much better chance of capturing a crook.
"I will definitely put it on again," Mullins said.
A surveillance system with four cameras and a DVR will run $19,000. A web camera is about $100.
