06:52 AM CDT on Wednesday, June 25, 2008

KHOU.com staff report

CLUTE, Texas -- The state department will test five people for mercury poisoning after a 12-year-old boy stumbled upon an old jar of the element.

Fifteen people have already been tested. The boy took the jar to several locations around the 500 block of Haynes and 140 Lakeview, and six children were exposed.

The Clute Police Department said 2 of the 4 pounds of mercury were recovered. Levels at the original address were found to be beyond unsafe, and the contents of the home will have to be destroyed.

Lab results are expected Saturday.
