Stay of execution lifted for man who killed Humble woman, toddler

HOUSTON—A Houston man who killed an Humble woman and her child 17 years ago will once again head to the execution chamber in Texas.

The Court of Criminal Appeals on Tuesday lifted a stay of execution granted to Derrick Sonnier last week.  They also refused to stop the Wednesday execution of Karl Eugene Chamberlain, a man who raped and killed a Dallas woman in 1991.

Harris County prosecutors said they would be returning to court soon to seek a new execution date for Sonnier.

The state halted all executions Sept. 25 when the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider a Kentucky challenge of the constitutionality of lethal injection.

Last week, lawyers working on behalf of Sonnier filed the last-minute appeal on the grounds that the state of Texas changed its procedures for how it performs executions.

The appeal said the Texas procedure would cause Sonnier unconstitutional pain and suffering.

He was granted the stay just 90 minutes before he was scheduled to die.

Sonnier received the death sentence for beating and stabbing Melody Flowers and her toddler to death in 1991.

Flowers’ children discovered the bodies after they came back from school.

Police found Sonnier a few doors down, covered in blood.
