New computer program helps law enforcement fight insurance fraud

HOUSTON—Law enforcement officers are about to get a new tool to help fight insurance fraud.
It’s a computer program called Texas Sure.
The program is designed to tell officers if a particular vehicle has liability insurance.
“It’s going to make it easier for us and make it quicker,” Deputy Felipe Gallegos said.
All officers have to do is enter a Texas license plate number into a database and they get immediate results.
The program will be tested in Austin for the next 60 days. Houston officers will be able to use it late in the summer.
But the program is already raising some concern among critics.
They worry that a flaw in the technology could lead to innocent drivers being taken to jail.
Others aren’t worried at all.
“I don’t have anything to hide. So I don’t see how they could use it in any other way. So I don’t have any problem with it whatsoever,” driver Gary Shores said.
Policyholders won’t have to do anything different. Insurance companies will be required to submit the updated information to state authorities.
