HOUSTON -- Saturday marks the 10th anniversary of the death of James Byrd, Jr. It was a decade ago, June 7, that Byrd was tied to the back of a truck and dragged to his death in the east Texas town of Jasper.
The incident sparked national outrage and reopened the debate on race relations in this country.
To mark the anniversary, people gathered at the Cullen Oaks Community Center Monday night in Houston. It is just one of hundreds of commemorative events scheduled across the country through this weekend.
The Houston event was organized by Byrd’s daughters, who used the time to educate people about the use of nooses and lynching as means of intimidation and murder throughout history.
Two of the men guilty of Byrd’s murder are on death row, while a third is serving a life sentence.
