HOUSTON -- If you plan to protest your property taxes, Monday is the deadline.

Homeowners can put it in writing and mail it or go online to submit a formal protest of your tax appraisal. Property values are up again this year, and the Harris County Appraisal District expects to see more people protesting.

Residential home values are up 6 percent this year, and commercial property taxes are up 34 percent. In some ZIP codes, the jump is even higher.

The Harris County Tax Assessor cites oil prices, rising rents and high employment for the increase.

Each year, the state sets what they think property values should be.

"The state still thinks they haven't raised values enough even for last year," Assessor-Collector Paul Bettencourt said. "What will happen: almost everyone will protest their value."

Bettencourt said about half of those who protest will receive an adjustment.
