Dispatcher recalls effort to save woman trapped in flooded car
02:35 AM CDT on Saturday, May 31, 2008
LA MARQUE, Texas -- In the middle of the night on April 26, Kristen Anet Sanchez was on her cell phone pleading for help. On the other end of that phone conversation was a a La Marque police department dispatcher just as desperate to find a way to save her.
No matter how many times Cherrelle Searuggs plays back the eight-minute conversation in her head, the 22-year-old dispatcher still can't change the outcome.
“I was really talking through tears,” she said. “It's like someone is ripping your heart out as you're talking to them, because you want to help them so bad.
“I want to be out there to give them my hand and say, ‘Come on let's go.’”
Searuggs was the last person ever to talk to the 20-year-old Sanchez, who called 911 last month while trapped inside her submerged car.
Texas City police said she drove off an embankment along Highway 146. Her car flipped into a small pond and water started to pour in.
“I heard the water coming. I was telling myself, ‘Come on Cherrelle, you have to get something,” said Searuggs.
The dispatcher repeatedly asked Sanchez where she was, but the terrified woman struggled with details.
More than three minutes passed before Sanchez said she was by the plants in Texas City. Another two passed before she said she was driving to Galveston.
“(I tried) to keep her calm long enough to tell me anything,” said Searuggs.
Eight minutes into the call though the phone went silent. Police finally found Sanchez's car a full 27 minutes after the initial call to 911.
“I kept asking myself is there anything else you could have done,” said Searuggs. “After listening to the call… No I couldn't figure out anything else to do.
“I've come to accept that.”
On Friday, Texas City police released more recordings from that dreadful night. The audio includes the communication between Texas City dispatchers and emergency crews that were having a difficult time finding the trapped woman.
Sanchez’s autopsy and toxicology report were also made public late Friday. The medical examiner confirmed that Sanchez drowned.
The toxicology report showed that the 20-year-old, who was reportedly coming from a Kemah-area topless club, had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit.
It also found that she had ecstasy in her system.
