Pregnant victim of League City wreck suffered brain damage

09:11 AM CDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2008

By Chris Paschenko / The Daily News

GALVESTON — A League City woman involved in a spring break wreck that injured seven people is accused of having a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit, authorities said Tuesday.

Lauree Ann Snider Strunk, 38, surrendered to authorities Monday on a charge of intoxication assault, stemming from a five-car pileup March 19, said Lt. Jorge Treviño, a Galveston police spokesman.

Strunk abruptly left a downtown Galveston restaurant or bar and started the chain reaction wreck, detective Rick McCullor said.

Denise Knight of Temple, who was pregnant and visiting the island with her family, was the most severely injured, McCullor said.

The family visited the island’s water park, had dinner at a restaurant on the wharf and was returning to their hotel on Harborside Drive when their vehicle was struck from behind, McCullor said.

“All of the other victims were OK, but her family told me she suffered severe brain damage and had the mental capacity of an 11-year-old. Her child was OK,” McCullor said.

McCullor didn’t reveal Strunk’s exact blood test result, but said it was more than three times the legal limit of 0.08.

Attorney Margaret Hindman, who is representing Strunk, said her client surrendered to police Monday and was released on bond.

“She’s very upset these people were hurt, very sympathetic and very remorseful,” Hindman said.

Hindman said Strunk, who is a nurse, suffered a concussion but was not seriously injured. Hindman also said she doesn’t know what caused the wreck.

“She has a total blackout, but it’s slowly coming back,” Hindman said.

“There are still some extenuating circumstances that need to be investigated. I presume she’s innocent until we see what they have.”
