SPRING -- A brutal double murder that sent chills through a Spring neighborhood has been solved, according to community activist Quanell X.

He said the man who claimed he found his mother and grandmother dead Friday night has now confesssed to killing them.

Quanell X was with Theron Owens when he surrendered to sheriff's deputies Tuesday afternoon.

Owens originally told investigators he arrived at his mother’s residence in the 6600 block of Springfield Garden in northwest Harris County just before midnight Friday. He said he found his mother Joyce Owens, 63, and his grandmother Alberta Walker dead.

The women had been stabbed.

A neighbor called police after hearing Owens' screams.

Owens was handcuffed, taken into police custody for eight hours and questioned about the women’s deaths. He was later released without charges.

Owens accused investigators of singling him out because of his race and because he was the closest family member to the two women.

“It’s pathetic, it’s sad. Basically, they aren’t looking for anybody else. Like (investigators) said, ‘You got two strikes against you. You are black and you are from New Orleans,’” Owens claimed he was told.

Neighbors said the murder victims moved to Spring after fleeing Hurricane Katrina.
