Will Houston host the Super Bowl in 2012?
07:07 PM CDT on Monday, May 19, 2008
HOUSTON — At Mia Bella Trattoria in downtown Houston, the thought of repeat Superbowl crowds is just as mouth-watering as some of the food they offer up on the menu.
“I’m excited. I hope they come to Houston this time,” Mia Bella owner Hicham Nafaa said.
Nafaa remembers business was good during the 2004 Super Bowl.
“Money was good, revenue went up. We did very well,” Nafaa said.
Houston is going up against Indianapolis and Glendale, Ariz., which hosted the Super Bowl last year.

“We’re optimistic. We think we have a chance, hopefully at this time tomorrow we’ll have an answer,” Mayor's Office Spokesperson Frank Michel said.
Houston has a record of success and knows how to put on a party, but one thing Houston won’t have in 2012 is a new stadium. Indianapolis will.
“The NFL has shown pension for rewarding cities that come up with new facilities, and that may factor into their decision,” Michel said.
Even the head of the Super Bowl Committee in Arizona isn’t convinced the Super Bowl is headed to his town.
“I don’t know if it’s 2012. We’re going down there and hope to capture the flag, but it’s going to be every five years,” Mike Kennedy with the AZ Super Bowl Host Committee said.
Every five years would be just fine for the owners of Mia Bella. They’re still seeing the effects of locals coming out during the Super Bowl 2004 festivities.
“Even the people that don’t come to the historical district, they come and see how nice the sidewalks are, how nice it is so they come back,” Nafaa said.
But will the Super Bowl be back in 2012? Houston will find out Tuesday if city leaders scored a touchdown.
