LEAGUE CITY, Texas -- A police officer was uninjured when he and a 19-year-old Texas City man exchanged gunfire along Dickinson Bayou.

The man also escaped injury but was charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer after a team of police swarmed the area searching for him.

Darion Danthony Ray is being held in the Galveston County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

League City patrol officer U. Westmoreland pulled over a gold 2004 Honda Accord on the southbound feeder of Interstate 45 at about 4 a.m. Monday, League City police Sgt. David Hausam said.

The car was allegedly speeding and drove into Dickinson city limits before pulling over, Hausam said.

During the traffic stop, the Honda’s driver ran from the vehicle, crossed the freeway and ran into a wooded area behind the Forest Point apartment complex, police spokesman Sgt. John Jordan said.

As Westmoreland chased the man, the suspect allegedly fired a revolver at the officer and Westmoreland returned fire, Hausam said.

The men shot at each other in three separate exchanges, with the man firing six shots and the officer firing nine, Hausam said. None of the bullets hit either man.

Police officers from all surrounding cities were called in to help search for the man. The suspect was eventually found swimming in Dickinson Bayou after an officer in a Houston Police Department helicopter spotted him from above, Hausam said. It took less than an hour to find him, Hausam said.

Officers used a Taser to subdue Ray and arrested him.

A woman riding in the car drove away from the scene in the Honda. Police are unsure whether Ray had authorization to be driving that car.

Ray was found to have outstanding warrants, Hausam said.

League City’s jail information showed those warrants were from Galveston, Hitchcock and Texas City police. Bonds for those warrants total $17,000.

Criminal records show Texas City police, Galveston police and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office have charged him with various misdemeanors in the last two years.

The woman riding in the car is wanted for questioning in the case, and police continue to look for the gold Honda.
