More than 200 city, school, college district elections today

01:26 AM CDT on Saturday, May 10, 2008

Turnout is expected to be light across the eight-county region as voters head to the polls in more than 243 local municipal, school district and community college district elections today. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Some of the highlighted races of the day include the three-way race for Mayor of Sugar Land where popular councilman Daniel Wong is facing James Thompson and Russell Jones for the chance to replace outgoing mayor Dave Wallace.

Also in Fort Bend County, voters will decide if the county should get $74 million in bonds to build a new courthouse.

There is also a three-way fight for mayor in League City in Galveston County, where incumbent Jerry Shults is trying to fend of Toni Randall and Chris Mallios.

Several school districts have bond issues on the ballot today.

Klein ISD is asking voters for $647 million for new schools, Crosby ISD is asking for $103.5 million and Hitchcock ISD in Galveston County is asking for $39.98 million from voters.

Interestingly enough with all the distraction of the giant sinkhole, voters in Daisetta are headed to the polls to decide if Mayor Lynn Wells should hold on to his seat or should it go to challenger Eric Thaxton.

It was unconfirmed if the city’s polling location was at risk because of the sinkhole, which is actually on the outskirts of the city’s north end.

To find your local polling locations contact the local election official. In Harris County, voters can get assistance from the Harris County Tax Assessor Paul Bettencourt’s office to confirm their voter registration by calling (713) 368-8683.
