Thieves target truckers as diesel prices soar
Houston trucker said he was carjacked for his fuel12:20 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008
HOUSTON -- It can cost more than $1,000 to fill up for a big rig driver.
Their vehicles use diesel, which is selling at $4.13 per gallon.
As if paying more for diesel wasn’t enough, now truck drivers are dealing with fuel theft.
One truck driver told 11 News that he was carjacked Monday in southeast Houston.
HPD has released few details, but officials say they’re at a critical point in their investigation.
Sources tell 11 News that the incident started at a tanker filling station on Light Company Road just north of 225.
The driver completely filled his tanker and drove off.
But police say somewhere between the filling station and Scarborough Road, a man jumped into the cab, said he had a gun and ordered the driver to head toward the South Loop and the Gulf Freeway.
The reported thief then forced the driver out of the cab in the 2900 block of Woodridge.
The culprit drove off with the tanker fully loaded with diesel.
Houston Police say they are withholding any other specific details in hopes of getting close to that tanker.
Was this just a brazen diesel theft related to high prices or something else?
No one knows the answer yet.
Past tanker thefts similar to this one have become Homeland Security issues for obvious reasons.
