HOUSTON -- Bellaire police have asked that the Harris County District Attorney seek DWI and intoxicated assault charges against Tejano superstar Emilio Navaira.
In a police affidavit, it was revealed that Emilio’s blood alcohol level was .19 -- more than two times the legal limit -- when his tour bus crashed Easter morning in Houston. The legal blood alcohol limit in Texas is .08.
Emilio was seriously injured and several members of his band were also hurt when his tour bus crashed into a series of freeway barrels on Loop 610 on Easter morning.
Emilio was behind the wheel as the group was traveling from a performance in Houston to San Antonio.
Emilio flew through the windshield and doctors were sure he'd survive a critical injury to his brain.
After weeks in the hospital and several surgeries, Emilio was moved out of ICU and eventually released to TIRR to continue his recovery.
Police say Emilio was not licensed to drive the tour bus.
Ever since Emilio's crash, music fans have rallied to support the star. Reports that he had been drinking saddened many who have been praying since the crash Easter Sunday morning.
Tejano aficionado and radio host Alfred “Boogieman” Rodriguez says listeners are, “Always asking me how Emilio doing. The guys' an American idol.”
For more than a month, many people had suspected that Emilio Navaira had been drinking before he got behind the wheel of his tour bus.
