TSU considering new admission standards
01:18 AM CDT on Saturday, April 19, 2008
HOUSTON -- Benna Sayyed is nearing his college graduation.
“Graduating another semester, two at the most,” Sayyed said.
This is something he never thought he would accomplish, considering just 5 years ago he was a 24-year-old high school dropout with a GED.
Now he’s a college senior at Texas Southern University.
“Open enrollment really changed my life. It changed the way I think, the way I carried myself. I set my goals higher,” said the student.
But the policy that gave Sayyed a chance at college is now under scrutiny.
Right now to enroll at TSU, only a high school diploma or GED is required. Students also must take a college entrance exam, but how they score doesn’t matter, at least not yet.
The new president wants a set of enrollment standards, including a certain grade point average and a minimum score on the SAT or ACT.
The idea of doing away with open enrollment has created such debate that there’s an upcoming forum dedicated to the topic. And later this month specific admission standards will be presented to the Board of Regents.
“We are raising the bar at Texas Southern University. We have a concept of getting quality students. Our prediction is we will get the quality students the university wants to have,” Vice President of Enrollment Hasan Jimil said.
High school students visiting the campus gave their input on whether the policy should change.
“In a way, I say that is really bad because you are pushing people away,” Austin Maynard High School senior Matthew said.
Their opinions varied.
“I think it’s good because every school wants to improve itself,” Maria, a Reagan High School senior, said.
But for Benna Sayyed, the open door policy gave him the chance of a brighter future.
“I wanted to change my life,” he said.
Now he’s torn knowing a change in policy could benefit the university, but send some students in a whole different direction.
