Abducted girl disguised as a boy, family says

04:39 PM CDT on Saturday, April 12, 2008

HOUSTON—The woman who allegedly took a toddler from a Houston daycare center Friday may have tried to disguise the little girl as a boy.

Raeshala Rhylette Morris, 21, was charged with kidnapping Saturday in the abduction of 2-year-old K.K. Brantley, a girl at the daycare center where Morris worked.

Brantley’s family said Saturday they believe Morris was trying to pass the little girl off as a boy, changing her outfit and rearranging her hair in a more masculine style.

The family was reunited after hours of searching for K.K.

Before police found her with Morris, there was a false alarm.

Police mistook another young girl walking with her mother for K.K. at the Westpark Transit Center.

The mother of the other child was handcuffed but quickly released. “Thank you, Jesus, thank you!” she shouted as she walked away after being detained at the transit center. “I hope she find her baby cause I understand, but thank you Jesus.”

When K.K.’s mother found out it wasn’t her daughter, she fell to the ground in despair.

In the end, K.K. was found not far from the daycare center in Morris’ arms on Club Creek and Bissonnet.  Police said Morris had her own child taken away for physical neglect.

Raeshala Rhylette Morris is facing kidnapping charges.

She had recently been living at a homeless shelter and was working as a trainee at the daycare.

K.K.’s parents said Saturday the girl is doing fine, but they took her to the doctor just to be sure.

Child care licensing will be at the daycare Monday morning to try to figure out how an employee could just walk away with a child.  They plan to look into child-to-staff ratios and find out if the daycare has violated any policies in the past.

11 News reporter Jeremy Desel ran a check on the daycare Monday which indicated it had been cited before for not properly checking employees’ backgrounds.

The family on Saturday was also questioning why an Amber Alert was not issued for K.K. immediately.

Officers said they had to verify that an abduction had occurred and the child was in imminent danger before issuing the alert.

HPD said it was in the process of issuing the alert when K.K. was found.
