A tense SWAT standoff that shut down a southeast Houston neighborhood and forced a local school into a lockdown ended with three arrests and the discovery of explosives.
The ordeal began with a short police chase as Houston police were assisting Galveston County authorities in serving a warrant on Raymond Hugo Darden, 29, who was wanted for probation violation and who they considered dangerous.
In addition to several drug convictions, Galveston County law sources told 11 News that Darden is believed to be part of a violent white supremacist group.
Houston police initially set up observation on the suspect’s home in the 1400 block of Globe when officers saw a man and a woman flee from the house and take off in a black pickup truck.
Police gave chase and about three blocks away the man and woman bailed from the car and ran behind a home in the 600 block of Regal. Police called out the SWAT team and surrounded the home.
Police dogs were also called out to search the area for the suspects. During the search, nearby Freeman Elementary School was put on lockdown. The school eventually released students, but did so through a different entrance than the norm.
Eventually, the woman suspect came out of the home and turned herself in. Police then stormed the home and found the suspect in the attic.
Police then returned to the home on Globe where a third suspect was arrested.
At first, though police were fearful the house was booby-trapped. Officials told 11 News that they discovered that all of the gas burners of the kitchen stove had been turned on full blast.
After shutting off the gas to the home and allowing it to vent, police searched he home and found at least one pipe bomb. At that point the ATF and bomb squad were called out for an extensive search of the home.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that investigators found three explosive devices in the home.
