Texas City horse shot to death

07:23 AM CDT on Friday, March 21, 2008

By Mark Collette / Galveston County Daily News

TEXAS CITY — A Texas City woman woke Thursday to find one of her horses shot and killed, almost one year after the same thing happened.

Damita McNair said it was the day before Easter last year when she found one of her horses shot in the kidney. It had to be euthanized.

Thursday, the horse had been shot in the shoulder and was dead when she found it.

McNair’s property is at the corner of Phillips Street and Fifth Avenue North.

Neighbors said they heard about a dozen shots fired Wednesday night about 10 or 11 p.m.

McNair said stop signs in the area are frequently riddled with bullet holes.

One that was recently replaced already has three or four holes in it, she said.

“It’s spring break,” neighbor Ed Haag said.

“This could have been a kid running around out here in the dark and they could have shot him.”

Cruelty to a horse is a state jail felony.

Anyone with information should call the Texas City Police Department, 409-643-5760.
