Digital conversion to clip TV rabbit ears
05:31 PM CST on Friday, February 22, 2008
Just as the days of black and white TV are gone with the wind, Juanita Fonseca’s old fashioned set is becoming a relic of the past. “This doesn’t have no cable. It’s just the rabbit ears.”
In fact, it’s estimated 17 percent of Hispanics still pull their TV signals straight out of the air.
But next year, TVs with rabbit ears will see nothing but snow.
That’s why a lot of people who own old fashioned TVs will need a converter box.
“This box will allow you to receive a digital signal with a separate antenna and still get picture on your old analog television,” said Ryan Phillips with Best Buy.
If you own a digital television you have nothing to worry about come February 2009.
If your TV has rabbit ears, you can get a $40 coupon to purchase a converter box.
To get that coupon just go to Dtv2009.gov or call 1-888-DTV-2009.
Hearing-impaired consumers can use our TTY service by calling: 1-877-530-2634 (English/TTY) or 1-866-495-1161 (Spanish/TTY)
You can also mail in your request to: TV Converter Box Coupon Program, PO BOX 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000.
Every household is eligible for two coupons.
TV’s with Comcast digital cable won’t need a converter boxes.
“We are going to take care of everything. It will be a seamless transition that you won’t even notice,” said Michael Bybee. He’s the Comcast manager.
But without a converter box, Fonseca’s rabbit ear TV signal becomes a snowstorm gone with the wind.
