Post office error means big trouble for local veteran, wife

Theo Baudoin and his wife, Mary, have come to rely on the clockwork of certain routines living in San Leon.

Routines like caring for their dog and getting the mail every day.

Come rain or shine, they say that held true until about 3 or 4 months ago when the post office changed their mailing address.

The Baudoins were told they had to change their address from a route number to a street address.  That way, if there’s an emergency, officials can more easily locate their residence.

But solving one problem started another – the Baudoins stopped getting their mail.

“I sent in a card that says ‘change it from this to this,’” Baudoin said.

The couple claims they sent out change of address cards, but the only change they noticed was a cut in services.

“They cancelled my wife’s Blue Cross Blue Shield in December,” Baudoin said. “Verizon cut the telephone off because of nonpayment. We did not get a bill.”

The Baudoins believe their ZIP code may have caused the confusion.

According to the post office computers, a resident who lives in the zip code 77539 – the Baudoins’ ZIP code – lives in Dickinson, not San Leon.

The post office apologized for the mistake, saying they determined a “keying error” was made when the Baudoins’ new address was put in the system.

An apology from the post office may help the couple fend off any extra charges stemming from the trouble.

And now that the mistake has been corrected, the mail and displaced bills have started pouring in.
