'Baby Grace's' grandmother touched by naming of Riley's Island
11:56 PM CST on Friday, February 15, 2008
HOUSTON -- A group of local fishermen, who own part of the island where two-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers was found, renamed their island in her honor Wednesday.
The story reached all the way to Riley’s family in Ohio where her grandmother asked for the chance to deliver her thanks to the men who built the sign and touched her heart.
“But it’s just you know very heartwarming that the people are reaching out like that,” Riley’s grandmother Sheryl Sawyers said.
There is still an effort underway to get the state legislature to officially designate the island as Riley’s Island.
An effort the Sawyers family hopes is influenced by the generous gesture of a group of Galveston fishermen.
