Thousands of Muslims march through downtown Houston
06:16 PM CST on Sunday, January 20, 2008
They gathered Sunday so people can know about what they believe happened nearly 1,400 years ago.
They consider it the worst act of terrorism.
They are Muslims, and they’re gathering for the Islamic New Year.
During this first calendar month, followers of Imam Husain commemorate and mourn his death and the deaths of his 72 followers.
They were butchered so many centuries ago in Karbala, a city in present-day Iraq.
The faithful walk to protest oppression, to fight injustices and to send out a message that Islam stands for peace.
Before the march, they prayed and eulogized the people who were killed.
The mourning period lasts for more than two months.
It’s a way for them to show the world that followers of Imam Husain believe in liberty and justice and are taking a stand against terrorism.Inside KHOU.com
