Sharpstown Center not closing
07:21 PM CST on Wednesday, January 16, 2008
Sharpstown Center may seem over the hill.
But the forty-six-year-old, two-story, 1,000,000 square foot shopping complex is not over and done with.
“The mall is not closing,” the general manager said.
Since July, the mall has been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Houston’s first air conditioned mall is also up for sale, but time is not up for the 110 tenants with stores in the center.
Rumors of a possible closure started swirling faster than customers in the mall can whip out their credit cards when Macy’s and Finger Furniture pulled out of the building.
Both were major anchor stores for the mall.
“I asked my neighbor, ’What do you think, you going to leave?’ They say no. We’re still doing OK. We’ve been here for a long time, and we’re doing better and better,” Johnny Dang said.
Dang owns a jewelry store at Sharpstown.
He says business is good, and he has the celebrity customers to prove it.
Other storeowners agreed.
In fact, the general manager said many of the tenants are currently negotiating new leases with the center.
They should all be worked out by the end of February – maybe just in time for someone new to step in and claim ownership.
