At first, bees were what had Steven Gilbert complaining. “We’ve never been able to just sit on our front porch. Can’t even let the kids come outside.”

There was also a stench coming from his neighbor's home on Waverly Grove in Northwest Harris County.

So, a county commissioner asked constables and the SPCA to check the home.

It’s something the county does for residents, says Precinct 5 Commissioner Steve Raddack. “If we find out about it, I f somebody tells us, then we can react to it. “

The unidentified homeowner agreed to allow investigators inside.

Officials found so much trash they could barely open the front door.

“This is pretty bad,” said Heidi Brasher with the SPCA. "This is probably one of the worst ones we’ve seen in terms of trash and fecal material. There’s empty food cans all over.”

The SPCA removed eight cats from the home and several carcasses of other dead animals.

No cruelty charges have been filed, but that could change.

Inside the home, officials found fleas and bees.

The fleas were so bad that SPCA workers had to be sprayed from head to toe.

The smell was so bad they could barely breathe.

Lt J.J. Kovar was only able to stay in a few minutes. “The walls are yellowing, feces on the wall and cats running everywhere.”

The SPCA is taking the cats to a veterinarian, but already rescue workers can tell that some of them have infections.

One man who owns a pest control company plans to remove the bees Saturday.

He expects to find some of the largest nests he’s ever seen.
