Where do you go after back to back championships?

According to city records, the answer may be near downtown.

This week the City of Houston signed letters of intent with several property owners just east of Highway 59, setting the stage to buy the land.

But the deal with the Dynamo isn’t done.

“We think the private parties should pay for the construction of that stadium. We do not have an agreement with the Dynamo to do so,” said Houston Mayor Bill White.

Nor is anyone saying exactly where the land for a new stadium is.

What is officially known is that the stadium would take up several blocks just east of 59, very close to downtown Houston.

A new apartment complex now sits just east of Minute Maid Park and east of 59

But just east of that there’s an empty field and a lot of old warehouses.

It’s the spot that many have been saying for months would be perfect for a new Dynamo stadium.

And there’s something else in the works for soccer fans.

The owners of several lots west of 288, near Sims Bayou and Almeda Genoa, have also received city offers.

The plan is to develop 18 soccer fields there by next year.

They’d look like a complex that now sits in northwest Harris County. And as part of the Dynamo deal, Mayor White says the team would have to practice there. “It’s going to be one of the biggest things in amateur sports to happen in this city in a long, long time.”

But will the stadium happen?

It now appears a deal is closer than ever.
