Kevin Reece's 11 News report

A gunman involved in a shooting in southeast Houston Monday told police he was just trying to protect his family.

But no matter why he opened fire, his neighbors say they were shaken by the bloody scene.

According to police, two men drove up to the home in the 4400 block of Walker around noon.

That’s when the resident came out of the house with an automatic weapon and opened fire.

One of the men in the car was shot dead.  The other was taken to Ben Taub.  He may lose his leg.

Police work the scene of the shooting.

“I found this guy laying over in the driveway with half his leg shot off,” neighbor David Johnson said.

The gunman’s ex-wife, Wynona, says he was just trying to protect her house and that someone had been issuing them death threats.

“These people were threatening us for a very long time,” she said.

Wynona told 11 News the victims were members of her family.  HPD would not elaborate.

They are investigating the relationship between all involved and if the deadly shooting was somehow justified.

Either way, Johnson has seen enough.

“Anytime you see a guy dead and another guy with his leg shot off, you kind of thing you could be next,” he said.

Police have yet to release the identities of the victims or the alleged shooter.

The gunman surrendered without trouble at the scene and was taken to jail.
