Astros' owner breaks silence on steroid controversy
04:27 PM CST on Saturday, December 15, 2007
Astros officials say they're ready to get to the truth about steroid use among its players and across baseball after Thursday's release of the Mitchell report.
The document says there's rampant steroid abuse in professional baseball and it names names.
The list includes one current and seven former Astros. First, there's newly-acquired infielder Miguel Tejada.
Then there’s superstar pitchers Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte, plus Stephen Randolph, Ron Villone, Chris Donnels, Gregg Zaun and the late Ken Caminiti.
Several players are already firing back, including Clemens, whose attorney calls the report bogus.
Two congressional hearings have also been set to dig into the issue further. Top Major League Baseball officials are scheduled to testify in the hearings.
Astros owner Drayton McLane finally broke his silence about the report Friday.
“In the list, a number of them I have known personally (because they) have been involved with the Houston Astros. What saddens me is the issue is a really, really serious issue in our society,” said McLane.
McLane also addressed the fact that former Astros ace Clemens was a dominant figure within the report.
But he also pointed out that, so far, there are just allegations of wrongdoing and sometimes criminal behavior, but that nothing has been proven.
