Wendell Edwards' 11 News report

Beyond the security guard station, behind the gates of Weston Lakes in Fulshear, a community is in shock.

“Actually a little startled, because it makes you feel you are not really safe anywhere. Whether it’s a gated community of not,” resident Janice Keller said.

Weston Lakes is an upscale subdivision where a woman was stabbed at her home Tuesday.

Two suspects posed as delivery men reportedly knocked on Martha Fields’ door and attacked her while she was home alone.

“They said they had to deliver a package and she said she hadn’t ordered any package. At that point, they stormed the door, kicked the door in on top of her,” Fort Bend Co. Sheriff Milton Wright said.

Wright said the armed suspects then tied her up, ransacked the house, demanded money and  stabbed Fields, 54.

But why that particular home?

“Something took them to that house. We don’t know what that something is at this point,” Wright said.

It’s also not clear how the suspects got into the neighborhood.

The sheriff says investigators are checking the written logs of the vehicles that entered the community before the attack.

Though the investigation is just beginning, sources tell 11 News the robbery may not be what it seems, because nothing was taken from the home.

Detectives say they need to question Fields and take inventory of the home to be certain.

So now, in the wake of a horrible crime, Weston Lakes residents are on guard, afraid if who could be lurking in their once-safe neighborhood.

Fields, a retired teacher from HISD and Fort Bend ISD, is listed in serious but stable condition at the hospital.
