HPD busts ID theft hot spots
11:35 AM CST on Saturday, November 17, 2007
Only 11 News was on the scene when officers raided a business they say was a favorite with crooks.
The shop made it very easy for bad guys to drain money from your account.
The financial crimes unit of the Houston Police Department has so many identity theft cases sitting on their desks they say they cannot investigate them all.
I.D. theft is the fastest-growing crime in America. There were more than 10 million victims last year alone.
So how is local law enforcement trying to slow it down?
HPD and the Harris County District Attorney's office say they are aggressively pursuing businesses that make it easy to get fake IDs.

Digital ID, located in the 9200 block of Gessner was recently raided because the owner was allegedly making counterfeit driver's licenses.
One undercover officer showed 11 News a poster that was displayed inside. It shows all the different states from which the owner said she could make an ID.
And her picture was on all of them.
Her name is Roohangiz Fazel. She is 72.
Court records show she's been charged with forgery -- specifically, manufacturing counterfeit driver’s licenses with the intent to sell.
After posing as customers and purchasing the fake licenses, undercover officers obtained a warrant, went back in and not only arrested Fazel, but also confiscated her computer equipment, printers, cutting machines and a digital camera.
Sources with the Harris County District Attorney’s office say the licenses she was allegedly making would display on the back that they were not official government documents in fine print.
But a police source said that didn't matter, because they were clearly being sold to defraud someone.
In October, 11 News went along with DA’s office to a flea market on Airline.
More than a dozen people were arrested in that sting.
The suspects were allegedly selling immigration and Social Security cards.
And they were allegedly being made inside a small two-room trailer just a few blocks away.
Back on Gessner in just a few hours, Digital I.D. went from being open, to locked up tight.
The war against ID theft continues.
