Dynamo stadium deal at hand

12:35 PM CST on Thursday, November 15, 2007

By Matt Musil / 11 News Sports

The Dynamo team is just one win away from its second straight Major League Soccer championship. But the team is also getting closer to building its own stadium in conjunction with the city of Houston.

It's obvious Mayor Bill White is a Dynamo fan, and he wants this stadium deal done.

It's also tough to find any opposition to the proposed downtown stadium at City Hall.

Because on this issue, as the mayor goes, so goes the council.

"We don't want the taxpayers to pay for a private interest. We want the city to support an enterprise like this because obviously it's going to be good," said Councilman Adrian Garcia.

Neither side is saying exactly where the stadium would be built, but we do know it'll be located east of Minute Maid Park.

Walking around this area, it’s easy to surmise that the land located southwest of the corner of Dowling Street and Texas Avenue would be a potential site.

Fans seem excited about the prospects of a new soccer-specific stadium, but some worry that ticket prices might go up with the new venue.

Dynamo president Oliver Luck says that won’t be the case.

"You can take a family of four for $60 which is really unheard of today in most professional sports so," said Luck. "I don't think we're going to drop that strategy in the near future, even with the new building."

Garcia thinks a new stadium will be something to celebrate.

"In the near future, maybe we're not onlyl celebrating our second championship, but we may be celebrating a new home for the Dynamo," he said.
