Toy exposes kids to date rape drug
12:39 AM CST on Thursday, November 8, 2007
A popular toy is under recall because it exposes children to the date rape drug GHB.
Five children have already been hospitalized. But, how is it possible?
How could a toy expose your kids to GHB.
Just to look at the toy. It sure looks like fun.
But try telling that to 10-year-old Charlotte Lahare and her mother.
"I was just beside myself. I was just so frightened because I thought literally that she wasn't going to make it,” said Margaret Lahare, the girl’s mother.
Charlotte was hospitalized. She was violently ill, her mother says after playing with Aqua Dots, also known as Bindees.
It is one of the hottest toys around. Pea-sized beads that bond together when sprayed with water. It was recently named best toy in several lists.
Now it is named with quite an opposite tag: Deadly.
Doctors say if swallowed the body somehow converts the chemicals into what is commonly known as the date rape drug -- GHB.
"This toxin can cause you to become comatose from which you make either obstruct your airway or stop breathing and potentially cause death,” said Dr. Narin Gunja.
There is no doubt, the toy is hugely popular.

"I bought this for my 3 year old and she loves it,” one praise reads.
"He used up the original and I just reordered from the manufacturer,” wrote another parent.
The toy is sold by Moose Enterprises; a company based in Australia. But the toys were manufactured in China and exported from Hong Kong.
Officials there are investigating-
The company has posted a warning and advisory on its Australian website.
But there is still no warning on the American site for Aqua Dots.
Still, most of the stores 11 News spoke with, including Target, Toys-R-Us, and Wal-Mart, said it has been pulled from store shelves.
