HUNTSVILLE – Captured prison escapee Jerry Martin is at Huntsville Memorial Hospital after attempting to hang himself early Wednesday morning.

“He was found pretty quickly,” said Michelle Lyons, Spokesperson, Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Martin tried to hang himself by wrapping his boxer shorts around his neck and attaching it to a ceiling light fixture.

Guards, who check him several times an hour, discovered him at 5:25 A.M. in his solitary confinement cell at the Texas Department of Corrections Estelle Unit in Huntsville.

Martin is one of two prisoners who escaped from their farm detail Monday morning, stole a truck, and ran over and killed TDCJ Correctional Officer Susan Canfield.

Both men were captured within hours.

“I don’t have nothing to lose,” Martin told 11News on Monday about why he staged the escape and ran over the guard.

Paramedics took him to the hospital with redness and swelling to his neck.

Lyons said he should be released and sent back to prison around lunch time.

As for the escape itself, a review by the department’s independent investigator’s office and the Texas Rangers will determine what occurred and how it could have been prevented.

“It’s these types of details that will be a part of the focus of the serious incident review,” said Lyons told the Houston Chronicle.

“At that point, we will be able to examine what was done correctly and where any breakdowns may have occurred.”
