Yet another adoption scam exposed
12:12 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 25, 2007
Several years ago, the Houston office of the FBI, told me about an adoption scam that was happening all over the country.
Believe it or not, there are women who look for couples online that are looking to adopt a newborn. Using the Internet, the women make contact with the couples and claim that they are pregnant.
The couples obviously get excited and they begin a bond with these women, often trading photographs and stories.
Belinda Ramirez was one of those women who claimed she was pregnant and wanted her baby to go to a good family.
For a price.
A few years ago, the FBI arrested her outside of Corpus Christi for stealing money from a Colorado couple that wanted to adopt.
Ramirez would often ask the couple for money to pay for food, clothing, or sometimes money to pay her electric bill. She was not pregnant and is currently serving time.
Here in Houston, a woman named Michelle has been convicted of fraud for doing the same type of scam.
But since her arrest and serving out her penalty, she is allegedly back to lying to "want-to-be" parents again.
Just last week a couple from California and North Carolina visited Houston to meet with her. She appears to be pregnant, but she is not.
Adoption agencies will tell you never to send money to pregnant mothers. In fact, in some states it is illegal.
