Construction debris falls from interchange, smashes van

Wendell Edwards' 11 News report

The interchange at the Beltway and Katy Freeway is no stranger to frustration.

For Terrell Burgess, it’s a frustration that turned dangerous.

Last Tuesday night, Burgess said he was driving east on the feeder road of I-10 at the Beltway when a piece of debris crashed on top of his minivan.

“I jumped. The car swerved. There was a car behind and it swerved.  At that point glass started falling on my head,” Burgess said.

Burgess’ sun roof was shattered.  He pulled over and called 911 twice, but he says police never came.

Terrell Burgess says debris fell from the interchange and crashed into the roof of his van.

The next day, Burgess said TXDoT told him to contact the construction company to report the accident.

He says he did, but so far no one has returned his messages.

“I was upset no one came out, and everyone is playing it down like it’s not important,” Burgess said.

The people with the Katy Freeway Expansion project said there’s no record of an official complaint from Burgess.

“We do know that. Major construction activities are taking place at night, and when they do take place, we are closing the roads,” Tanya McWashington of the Katy Freeway Expansion project said.

Apparently, project on this phase of the expansion is ahead of schedule.

But Burgess wants to make drivers remain cautions.

“There’s a lot of danger, a lot of concern that should be placed in these areas,” Burgess said.
